Mexican Trucking..Doesn't Matter As Long As It's Not "My" Job

I have mentioned the issues time and time again. Why are we funding Mexican trucking companies to come take our jobs and drive wages down even further. I have said it. You have heard it. But I read something that kind of infuriated me. Talking about the reasons why we should end the ban on Mexican trucking, an expert from a prominent financial research institution said that the current system adds “cost” to the economy. The analyst went on to say that the costs being trimmed by allowing Mexican trucks in the United States is somewhere between 3% to 5%.

English: American Trucking Industry, on the 50...That is true and I am glad you have found the problem of what is wrong with our economy. It amazes me how fast economists are quick to slash American jobs when lobbying efforts are not there to protect them. I have just one question? If the financial research institute found that they could be more efficient without you, would you recommend they chop your job? Maybe they could be 3% to 5% more efficient without you. What if there is not as much grant money to pay salaries next year. The laws of capitalism require that some of the variable costs be reduced. You do not have to answer my question. There is only one answer to that question.

Mexican Cross Border Trucking…More Than Meets They Eye

Apparently there are some undisclosed dangers with the new Mexican cross border trucking program that the Department of Transportation has forgot to mention:

Mexican States with conflictsImage via Wikipedia
  • There is a real threat of the Mexican drug war spilling over into our Country
  • US companies cannot transport freight into Mexico due to the threat of drug violence
  • The DOT has to by law conduct 50% of all vehicle inspections on site. This puts DOT officers, who by Mexican law cannot carry firearms, at risk of getting seriously hurt, kidnapped, or murdered in Mexico
  • In Texas alone, 1.2 million violations have been found on Mexican trucks trying to enter the United States and Texas officials claimed not all trucks were inspected when entering the United States
  • Mexican trucks don’t have access to ultra low sulfur diesel. Thus they will be emitting emissions into California which were banned in 2006

My biggest question is, how is this going to work? This is not equal protection under law, in this case regulatory law, for all Americans. In fact, this is unequal protection for EVERY American. The only ones who seem to have any rights are the Mexican Truckers.

Mexican Truck Program is Underway

From Fleet Owner

July 2011

Kenworth near Sears Boyle Heights , Los Angeles.=ALERT: U.S., Mexico sign cross-border trucking program

The U.S. and Mexico formalized a cross-border trucking program that will end more than $2 billion of tariffs on exported U.S. goods and open up U.S. roadways to approved Mexican trucks.

According to the Dept. of Transportation, the agreement calls for Mexican trucks to comply with all Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and they must utilize electronic monitoring systems to track hours-of-service compliance. DOT will also review driving records and require drug testing of all drivers, to be analyzed by the Dept. of Health and Human Services at approved U.S. labs.

Mexican drivers will also have to prove “their ability to understand the English language and U.S. traffic signs.”

U.S. carriers will receive reciprocal authority to operate in Mexico.

DOT Issues Proposal for U.S./Mexican Truck Safety Program

February 01, 2011

Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood has shared with Congress and the Mexican government an initial concept document for a long-haul cross-border Mexican trucking program. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) says the program prioritizes safety while satisfying the United States’ international obligations.
A U.S./Mexican safety pilot program was ended in March 2009. The new document moves the process forward and addresses a variety of concerns. Regulatory enhancements include the following:
  • Equipping all vehicles with electronic on-board recording devices that allow monitoring of compliance with hours of service and other laws
  • Reviewing drivers’ U.S. and Mexican driving records
  • Examining the safety records of companies as maintained by the Mexican government
  • Requiring verification of drivers’ English language proficiency and knowledge of U.S. traffic laws

DOT proposal seeks to resolve trucking dispute with Mexico

 From Refrigerated Transporter
Jan 7/2011

The US Department of Transportation has unveiled an initial proposal for a long-haul cross-border Mexican trucking program that complies with US obligations under the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), while prioritizing the safety of products transported across the border.

This proposal contains general conditions that Mexican long-haul truckers would have to meet, including a safety audit, US emissions standards, and driver background checks.

Mexico has protested the lack of access as a NAFTA violation. In March 2009, after the US Congress failed to renew a pilot program that let a limited number of Mexican trucking companies haul freight beyond a 25-mile US commercial zone, Mexico placed higher tariffs on 89 US products. In August, Mexico added new products to the list after the United States failed to present a plan for resolving the trucking issue.
