Diesel Prices Still Low Despite The Wrath of Sandy

I cannot say the election has not had anything to do with this but I say enjoy it while it lasts. Despite fuel shortages in the Northeast diesel prices dropped again. After Tuesday all bets are off as to whether diesel will continue to drop.

Will Tommorrows Truck Be Powered By Gator Fuel?

I am not totally sure that tomorrow's truck will be powered by Alligator biofuel. Even if it does happen, it just doesn't seem that likely in lieu of natural gas, hydrogen cells, or solar power. It also doesn't sound futuristic enough. Regardless, the Gator Fuel article in this newsletter is entertaining...

Diesel Prices Lowest in Nearly Six Months

Diesel prices dropped for the third week in a row and are the lowest they've been since late February. Weekly figures from the Department of Energy show the average retail price of on-highway diesel is $3.937 a gallon, down 6.2 cents from last week and down more than 11 cents over the past three weeks. But it's still 85.6 cents higher than it was a year ago.

Prices still hovered at the $4 a gallon mark in the New England region, where the average price was the highest. The lowest average prices were reported in the Gulf Coast region at $3.806.

Crude oil futures prices, meanwhile, settled higher Monday, closing at $87.88 a barrel for light, sweet crude on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It was the highest price since Aug. 3.

Oil finished the week over $91 a barrel, up more than $3 from last Friday, Bloomberg reported.
Benchmark light sweet crude futures finished the day Friday at $91.54 a barrel, up 14 cents from Thursday on the Mercantile Exchange.

The increased price this week was due in part to U.S. economic data showing stronger factory output and continuing worldwide demand, Bloomberg said,

Diesel and gasoline have both risen for the past six weeks in the Department of Energy’s weekly price surveys, with diesel topping $3.33 and gasoline near $3.09 per gallon.
DOE’s next survey will be released Tuesday afternoon in Washington due to the federal holiday Monday.

Something else is going up, up and away these days and there's nothing beautiful about it — diesel prices.

The average weekly retail on-highway diesel prices jumped another 1.7 cents to $3.248 for the week ending Dec. 20, according to the Energy Information Administration of the Department of Energy.

That means a staggering increase of 52.2 cents since the same time last year.

Diesel took its biggest drop in 16 weeks, declining 3.3 cents to $3.094 a gallon, the Department of Energy said.

The decline was the biggest since a 5.2-cent drop on Feb. 1, turning around three months of increases in which the price had fallen just once.

The only other downturn since mid-February was a 0.7-cent dip on March 29. Monday’s decline left diesel 86.3 cents over the same week last year.

Last week’s half-cent uptick to $3.127 had put trucking’s main fuel at its highest level in more than a year and a half.

Gasoline, meanwhile, fell 4.1 cents to $2.864 a gallon, just the third decline in the past 13 weeks, DOE said following its weekly survey of filling stations Monday. It was the biggest decline since a 4.4-cent drop on Feb. 15.

Before Monday’s declines, gas had gained almost 30 cents in its upward run since mid-February, while diesel had risen 37.1 cents in three months.

The drops followed sharp oil-price declines this month, as crude fell from more than $86 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange on April 30 to finish Nymex trading Monday at $70.08, a five-month low, after briefly dipping below $70, Bloomberg reported.
